Our Favourite Herbs for Partying!

12/04/2017

One of the things that we are most passionate about here at the Happy Herb Company is how we can use herbs to increase mood, energy, relaxation and good vibes. In other words…herbs for partying!

Over the years, we’ve found that herbs can stimulate our senses and enhance our experiences in a much more holistic and balanced way than alcohol and other party drugs.

We recommend combining mood-enhancing, stimulating and relaxing herbs together, as a tea or herbal cocktail to get a well-balanced effect (which is what we do in most of our party products).

MOOD ENHANCERS

Who wants to party if you’re in a grumpy or low mood?  There are many herbs that can gently but effectively turn your frown upside down! Here are a few of our faves…

Damiana is one of our favourite herbs, as it boosts mood and relaxes the nerves. It’s a great herb to help take the edge off and get you in the mood to party, or make love!  Damiana is also a nice smoking herb…great if you’re trying to avoid smoking other things!

Mucuna is a mood boosting & aphrodisiac herb that boosts dopamine levels in the brain. It’s included in many of our party products. Mucuna is also helpful after partying to help rebalance brain chemistry & regulate mood after overindulging in alcohol or other drugs!

Kanna is another mood enhancer and natural antidepressant that works as a SRI (serotonin re-uptake inhibitor) which increases the extracellular concentrations of serotonin (the ‘happy hormone’). Smoking or chewing Kanna gives a buzzy euphoric feeling, which gently fades into relaxation. Brewed as a tea it uplifts mood and relaxes stress and anxiety. According to anecdotal reports, it can potentiate the effects of other substances.

Cacao is not only mood boosting, but also stimulating…a great combo for party time! It  contains magnesium (to relax the muscles), theobromine (a stimulant), serotonin (the happy hormone), L-tryptophan (a serotonin precursor) plus the chemicals phenylethylamine (a neurotransmitter that releases noradrenaline and dopamine) and anandamide (an endocannabinoid known as the ‘bliss molecule’). Cacao is also an MAO inhibitor, which helps these chemicals remain in your body longer. Wow, isn’t nature amazing!  No wonder it makes us feel so good!

STIMULANTS

You gotta have energy to party…and sometimes, we all need a little boost! Get activated, and get your heart pumping, with these all-natural stimulants.

Yerba Maté is a stimulating tea from South America, that is much longer lasting and less ‘jittery’ than coffee. It is packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Many people also find it boosts mood.

Guarana is another South American stimulant, which contains guaranine – which acts similarly to caffeine but is more slowly absorbed, and therefore lasts longer, and has no comedown or crash.

Guayusa comes from the Amazon and is related to Yerba Maté. It offers a clear, focused energy…that is somehow at the same time dreamy. In fact is also used to boost lucid dreaming states, and to increase capacity for meditation. A little goes a long way, and you can reboil the leaves several times to extract more goodness!

Kola Nut is another stimulating herb that comes from the nut of an African tree.  It contains caffeine and theobromine, and has a long lasting stimulation, as well as mild mood-enhancing effects.

TONICS

Rhodiola, Suma, Maca, Siberian Ginseng and Panax Ginseng are all adaptogenic tonic herbs that boost energy without the caffeine. This are great to combine with other stimulants, as they help the body adapt to stress, and many help tonify the adrenals and support endurance and stamina (instead of crash and burn!).

We also love SuperFeast Jing, which is a combination of traditional Chinese herbs to restore the adrenals and nourish the kidney essence (these organs get taxed when we stimulate). Instead of stimulating the nervous system, Jing cultivates abundant energy from deep within, in a holistic way

RELAXANTS

Passionflower, Hops, Skullcap, Blue lotus, Wild lettuce or California poppy are all excellent relaxing herbs that you can use to create a chilled out, mellow vibe in your punch or tea. Most of these herbs also make great smoking alternatives (as well as Lion’s Tale, Marijuanilla and many more!) For stronger smoking alternatives we have several herbal extracts and resins to choose from, as well as a beautiful & delicious vaping tonics range. (Ask in store or call the warehouse for more info)

RECIPES

It’s always good to have some party tricks up your sleeve! So why not try brewing up some herbal punch and be the star of the party?

For an energising & refreshing Vibrant Party Punch try this:

  1. Boil 1 litre of water.
  2. Add 3-4 Tablespoons Vibrancy tea blend & let steep covered for 15 mins.
  3. Strain into punch bowl & let cool.
  4. Add 1 litre of pineapple juice (or white grape juice) and some ice.
  5. You also add soda water or kombucha if you want some fizz!
  6. Add lemon juice and honey to taste.
  7. If you want to make it stronger, add some Summertime, BlissTea or one of our alcohol-free liquid herbal extracts.
  8. Garnish with Lemon or Pineapple slices or fresh mint leaves to make it festive.  Makes about 8 cups.
