Herbal Essentials for the Healthy Family

Here’s a list of our favourite herbs and natural products for families. We’ve included some for first-aid, stress, sleep, colds & flu, stomach upset, wounds, infections, and more. All are safe for kids too! 

Dragon’s blood

This sap from the Amazonian Croton lechleri tree is a must-have in your herbal first aid kit. It is superb as a liquid bandage and can stop bleeding, speed healing and prevent infection of cuts and wounds. Traditionally used externally for treating wounds and soothing insect bites, and internally for stomach ulcers & diarrhea. 

Rescue Plus 

This is a unique combination of the classic English Bach Flower ‘Rescue Remedy’ and the Australian Bush Flower Essence equivalent, ‘Emergency Essence’. Invaluable to have handy in times of stress or injury (or tantrums). 

Propolis

This antibacterial resin from beehives is great for boosting immune function, soothing sore throats, healing mouth ulcers, and speeding the healing of cuts and wounds. It is essential in your medicine cabinet or first aid kit for colds, flu, or as a liquid bandage.

Calendula

Great as a cream, balm, wash, compress or poultice for wounds, bruises, bleeding, burns, fungal infections, and insect bites. Calendula is also great as a tea for digestive inflammation and fungal infections. Also used as a mouthwash or gargle for gum and tooth infections, sore throat, and tonsillitis.

Slippery Elm

This soothing, demulcent, and nutritious herb is great to have on hand for both diarrhea and constipation (as well as stomach ulcers). It is also excellent mixed with honey and a little water to soothe sore and irritated throats. It is applied topically to skin sores to reduce inflammation. It can be used as a nourishing food during convalescence.  

Activated Charcoal

Excellent to have on hand for gastrointestinal upset, infections, or diarrhea. Helps to remove toxins (& pathogenic organisms) and soothe the digestive tract.

Lemon Balm

This wonderful aromatic herb is a great one to have on hand for kids. It is useful for colds and flus, as it calms the body and helps sweat out a fever. It can help settle an upset stomach and dispel gas. Lemon balm makes a soothing tea for nervous tension, anxiety, and depression.

Catnip

Catnip is well known for its relaxing effects, gently helping to relieve tension. Because of its mild nature, it is excellent to give to children for hyperactivity and nervousness. Its ability to promote sweating (diaphoretic) makes it useful to relieve fevers and at the onset of colds. As an antispasmodic and carminative (relieves gas), it eases stomach upsets, flatulence, and colic. It is also a great remedy for diarrhea in children. 

Chamomile

This humble herb is popular as a relaxing remedy for anxiety, stress and to promote sleep. It is also effective for soothing digestive problems such as gas, colic, and ulcers, especially when these are associated with nervous tension. Chamomile is gentle and safe enough for children and babies, to calm them and help them sleep. It is also used for muscle cramps, head colds, and allergies. Externally it can be applied as a cool tea to soothe inflamed skin, nappy rash, bites, burns, and eczema.

Arnica

Very effective for bumps, bruises, and strained muscles. Great to have on hand as a balm or cream or homeopathic. 

Colloidal Silver

Colloidal Silver is a non-toxic natural antibiotic with proven effects against bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi. No known disease-causing organism can live in the presence of even minute traces of silver. It can be used as a natural mineral supplement to boost the immune system, is non-toxic (unless allergic to silver), and does not sting. Aids natural skin healing of burns and infections kills fungus and bacterial growth, prevents odours (bins, shoes, and armpits), disinfects, improves water quality, and much more. Can be used internally or topically.

 

SPAGYRICS

A spagyric is a concentrated liquid herbal product that contains the essential oils, tincture, and mineral salts of a plant, as well as the vital essence. They are created using the entire plant through an alchemical process involving fermentation, distillation, and the extraction of mineral components from the ash of the plant. 

Spagyrics are convenient to use, because you only need a few drops, and are easy to carry with you. Our newly formulated Spagyrics have a vegetable glycerine base – great for kids because they taste sweet. We have many single herbs and formulas to choose from, but here are a few that are great for families and kids:

Stress Ease Spagyric

This lovely blend of Passionflower, Damiana, Lemon Balm, and Chamomile is a great choice for stressed-out parents and wound-up kids.

Skullcap Spagyric

This is one of the best ways to take this (usually) bitter-tasting herb. Great for anxiety, stress, nervous tension, tension headaches, and SLEEP!

California Poppy Spagyric

Another good one for anxiety and sleep. Pop a few drops in your (or your child’s) water bottle.

 

TEA BLENDS

Stress Less

This lovely lemony blend of Damiana, Lemon Balm, Chamomile, Lemon Myrtle, Skullcap, Passionflower, 

Licorice, Lemongrass, Mallow, and Cornflowers is a favourite to calm the nerves, reduce stress, and strengthen the nervous system. Great any time of the day or night to soothe, calm and de-stress. Safe for children – serve ½ strength.

Sleepy Time

This lovely blend of Passionflower, Lemon balm, Valerian, Licorice root, Chamomile, Lavender blossoms will help you unwind at the end of the day. Safe for occasional use for children to assist sleep (not recommended to use valerian regularly) – serve diluted with 1/2 water.

Digest Ease

This delicious blend of Peppermint, Licorice, Ginger, Fennel seeds, Calendula can improve digestion of heavy meals, relieve upset stomach and reduce flatulence. Great for both parents and kids.
