What is Kava

The Kava plant (Piper methysticum – “intoxicating pepper”) is a hardy, relatively slow growing shrub with heart shaped leaves closely related to the black pepper tree (hence its peppery taste). Compounds called kavalactones are responsible for the physiological and psychological effects which make this incredible plant so special.

Kava has been consumed traditionally in South Pacific Island cultures for thousands of years. All Happy Herb Co powders are pure, originate only from noble cultivars, and are high in the kavalactones, kavain and dihydrokavain. Each cultivar has its own chemotype (chemical composition) which alters its effects profile. The effects also depend upon the person consuming it. Many people love all our noble kavas, while some people greatly prefer one cultivar over another, so if you’re after a different buzz, be sure to try them all.

Kava Culture

In ancient times, Kava ceremonies in Vanuatu were surrounded by complicated rituals and restricted to secret societies where only powerful men could drink kava and practice sorcery. It was considered the gateway to the realm of the ancestors/spirits/Gods and was used for numerous medicinal purposes as well. In fact, kava was considered so powerful it was banned by Christian missionaries for about 100 years on many of the Vanuatu islands (between 1880-1980) in an attempt “to eliminate competition with other gods.” Kava has evolved in Vanuatu from a secret ceremonial drink to a relaxing beverage consumed daily although it still plays an important part in ceremonial events. Adult men will often gather at the end of the day to enjoy and share a few shells of freshly squeezed kava.

Traditional Preparation

This method is based on how Kava is traditionally consumed across Vanuatu. Perfect for a chilled Kava session with your mates!

Step 1

Place approximately 3 heaped tablespoons (35g ~ 1/3 cup) of our Traditional Grind Kava into one of our kava strainer bags and place into a bowl, add about 600ml of room temperature water.

Step 2

Tightly close the strainer bag and knead the kava well under water for 10mins.

Step 3

Squeeze all the excess water out of the strainer bag, and set aside (can be re-brewed later).

Step 4

Serve in half sized cups (referred to as shells in Vanuatu). Kava is best swallowed down in 1-2 quick gulps. Have a piece of fruit ready to cleanse the palate. Enjoy!
