This one is for the men…and subsequently the ladies, because an extra boost benefits us all anyways? 😉

Traditionally herbs have been used to increase potency, libido, stamina and overall vitality in men. Here are five herbs that we feel every man should know about, based on information derived from clinical studies and ancient herbal wisdom. 

1. Tribulus

A staple in ancient Chinese medicine and Eastern European folk medicine, tribulus has been used for centuries to increase muscle strength and sexual potency. Two active compounds in tribulus known as steroidal saponins are found in the leaves of the plant, specifically furostanol glycosides and spirostanol glycosides. These are believed to enhance testosterone levels in the body, which is the hormone responsible for male sex drive, physical exertion and energy.  

Preparation: Mix 1-2g into a paste with honey, then add hot water and drink as tea, or add to smoothies. Or try out our spagyric for a more potent formula. 

2. Tongkat Ali

Tongkat Ali goes by many names—Ali’s Walking Stick, Malaysian Ginseng, and LongJack being the most colorful among them. With nicknames like that, it can be assumed that tongkat ali has something to do with effecting male virility. Tongkat ali has traditionally been prized as an aphrodisiac and testosterone booster for enhanced sexual health and performance by herbalists all over the world. 

As some men age, their sexual activity might see a dip in action and testosterone levels. In clinical studies, Tongkat Ali has demonstrated the ability to increase libido and improve erectile dysfunction when compared to a placebo¹. In another study that examined 76 men with hypogonadism (impaired testicular function) over a four-week period, Tongkat Ali supplementation was shown to increase testosterone levels.

Beyond libido, tongkat ali demonstrates a potential to improve quality of life, physical fitness and overall fertility, along with increased sperm mobility and semen volume². In a recent study, tongkat ali increased muscle strength and size in men

3. Saw Palmetto

Saw Palmetto has long been regarded as one of the leading herbs for men by herbalists, primarily due to its tonifying effect on the male reproductive system. This may be particularly helpful with ailments of the prostate, a common problem for men over the age of 45 years, which can lead to incontinence, impotence and cancer. Herbalists claim that saw palmetto has a variety of benefits for men’s health, including preventing complications from prostate surgery, treating other prostate conditions, male-pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia), sexual dysfunction, and other conditions. 

Preparation: 2 tsp/cup, simmer gently 5 minutes. Drink as needed. 

4. Ginsengs

There are eleven different varieties of Ginsengs, including Siberian and Korean, all of which men are raving about! An excellent adaptogen, ginseng can be helpful for long-sustained energy³. In addition to its potential endurance and cognitive-enhancing benefits, men are taking ginseng to treat erectile dysfunction. A 2002 Korean study revealed that 60 percent of men who took ginseng noticed an improvement in their symptoms. Research published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology also claimed to provide “evidence for the effectiveness of red ginseng in the treatment of erectile dysfunction” (see study). 

Preparation of Siberian Ginseng: 1-2 teaspoons steeped in hot water as a tea or added to smoothies. Take 1-3 times daily. Also available in a medicinal tincture known as a Spagyric, which is made of the highest quality organic herb and 3-5 drops, 3 times a day is all that is required.

5. Damiana

Even more potent as an aphrodisiac when combined with Saw Palmetto, Damiana is an excellent libido-enhancer for men. Traditionally, Mexican women would give Damiana to their men so that they would be more vital and active in bed. Beyond its erection-boosting properties and kidney healing effects, Damiana is particularly good for subduing male anger and balancing stressº  — which also has an effect in bed! 

Preparation: Tea – 1/2 tsp per cup, steep 10 mins. Take 3 times daily. May be smoked as an alternative.
